Brad Pilon, Intermittent Fasting expert and author of Eat Stop Eat, discusses the max amount of calories that you can burn in a day.
He discusses that the max is about 40 calories per pound of body weight per day.
So a 200-pound man could possibly burn 8,000 calories in a day, but very few people would be able to train at the intensity necessary to do that.
I actually think the best approach is a combo of exercise and diet.
For diet, a simple approach is intermittent fasting.
