Health Foods Won’t Boost Your Immune System?

I decided to do some research on immune-boosting foods this morning.

I was just creating a grocery list for myself.

Each article listed different immune-boosting foods, but here are the ones I saw listed over and over.

  • Turmeric
  • Blueberries
  • Broccoli
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Yams
  • Spinach
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Green Tea
  • Citrus Fruits
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Watermelon
  • Mushrooms
  • Yogurt
  • Chocolate

This is a good start.

I will definitely focus a bit more on sweet potatoes and yams as one of my main sources of carbs.

I’ve been eating a lot of rice, but will make the switch.

After I had my grocery list rocking, I ran across an article written 4 years ago titled:

Why bingeing on health foods won’t boost your immune system.

So this title probably gets clicks.

The article explains how the immune system works.

I’ll do my best to summarize it here:

  • Our bodies product phlegm and snot when we are sick to flush out infection.
  • We get a fever when we are sick to try to kill the infection by boiling it.
  • We become sleepy and lethargic to encourage us to stay at home, so we don’t go out and pick up another infection while our immune system is battling the current infection.

Our immune system gives us these symptoms of sickness, to fight infections.

The article explains that if a supplement or food truly fought infection it would give us these same symptoms of sickness.

I believe the headline is slightly misleading.

The foods I listed above keep the body in a stronger and healthier mode.

They have to help the body to a certain extent.

I’ll probably get everything on the list, but skip the chocolate (I follow a low fat diet to keep a lean body).

This article also encouraged exercise.

I liked how the article explained it.

“When your heart beats more, your immune cells that patrol for problems move around more,” says Professor Akbar. “By exercising you keep them out looking for potential problems rather than sitting around waiting for problems to happen.”

How should you exercise?
