One of my favorite things about being a fitness writer & fitness researcher is people sending me links to obscure studies.

It’s impossible for one person to keep up with all of this stuff.
I feel like I am part of a group of explorers.
Today someone in the High Carb Fat Loss Facebook Group, sent me a link to a study about healthy brain aging.
We have known for years that severe caloric restriction drastically improves brain health in rats.
…but it isn’t feasible for humans to cut back calories so much.
Even if it worked, I’m not sure most of us would want to virtually eliminate so much food from our diets.
The study is titled:
Low-protein high-carb diet shows promise for healthy brain aging.
A couple of quotes:
“It shows a lot of promise that we have been able to replicate the same kind of gene changes in the part of the brain responsible for memory that we also see when we severely restrict calories.”
“The hippocampus is usually the first part of the brain to deteriorate with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. However, the low-protein high-carbohydrate diet appeared to promote hippocampus health and biology in the mice, on some measures to an even greater degree than those on the low-calorie diet.”
The study also discusses the brain health of Okinawans who follow a low protein high carb diet.
This is interesting.
We found out last year that high fiber diets slow overall aging.
Fiber affects the DNA directly.
Those on a high fiber diet have longer telomeres than people who eat very little fiber.
High fiber dieters were about 5 years younger biologically…
Dietary Fiber and Telomere Length in 5674 U.S. Adults: An NHANES Study of Biological Aging
“A difference of 4.8 to 6.0 years in cell aging was found between those in the lowest compared with the highest quantities of fiber intake. Overall, the present study highlights the risk of accelerated aging among U.S. women and men who do not consume adequate amounts of dietary fiber.”
I realize low carb diets are trendy right now.
But…
I really believe that current research will push us towards a high carb and higher fiber diet.
If you want to feel the benefits of a higher carb diet.

I believe the fitness mainstream will catch up to us in 3-5 years.
