How to Adjust Workout Intensity for Fat Loss

There are a couple of muscular guys in my gym I see each time I’m there, who walk on the treadmill after lifting.

They each probably have 30-40 pounds of fat to lose and walk for about an hour.

Here’s the problem…

They walk so slowly that it is like viewing something in slow motion.

I think people are too paranoid about muscle loss when doing cardio.

I get it…

If you want to ensure that you maintain as much muscle as possible, walking is a decent choice.

I actually think starting with HIIT followed by walking is the best route.

  • Intense exercise like HIIT done on cardio machines RELEASE stored body fat into the bloodstream .
  • Slow and steady cardio BURNS this fat without risk of muscle loss.

But…

This walking should require at least a LITTLE effort.

Try and have a spring in your step.

You want the HIIT part to get the heartbeat up…

…and use steady state walking cardio to keep the heartbeat up without expending a ton of effort.

This walking pace should be just below the point where you begin feeling a burn in your legs.

A faster pace than EASY.

A slower pace than HARD.
